That is it!  I was even having the same problem between two linux boxes,
both running identical versions of Linux and identical versions of
openvpn.

I set the mtu to 1400 (the mtu-extra setting gave an error) and it works
perfectly!  (As soon as I poked it to 1400 with ifconfig, it all started
working, without restarting the vpn).

Thanks for the posting, I was begining to think I was going insane....
Before, I could ping, telnet, and do small webpages, but nothing else
worked.
