[Openvpn-users] Release: OpenVPN GUI for Windows v1.0-beta1

  • Subject: [Openvpn-users] Release: OpenVPN GUI for Windows v1.0-beta1
  • From: Mathias Sundman <mathias@xxxxxxxxxx>

Don't get to exited yet!

This is a very early beta with only a few features, but I though I'd release it anyway to get some feedback on what kind of features people would like to see in this application.

The only functionallity this version got yet is that it put itself as an icon in the systray and gives you two menu options: "Connect" and "Disconnect".

Connect works just like the service wrapper. It launches one openvpn process for each config-file it finds in "C:\program files\openvpn\config\", and redirects all output to a log-file with the same name as the config-file.

It currently does not detect if a openvpn process terminates, but that will be fixed in next version.

Features I will implement in the near future:

1. Detect if an openvpn process dies, and notify the user.

2. Create a list on the menu with all configs it has found, and let the user choose which to connect to. Multiple simultanious connections will be supported if multiple tun/tap devices has been created and the config-files contain correct "dev-node" options.

3. Add a menu-command to view the log of each connection.

4. Enhance the view-log function to work like unix "tail -f".

After this is done I'd like to work on integrating the gui with openvpn better, to get status messages from it and present them in a user-friendly way to the user. Hopefully James has some code ready to support this by the time I've finished the other parts...

Features I'd like to see added, but not sure if I'll have time todo:

1. Allow the user to enter the private key passphrase in a dialog and pass it on to openvpn. (Will this require patching OpenSSL?)

2. A GUI based configuration-file editor.

There is no installation package, just a singel 13KB large exe file. You can get it precompiled from here:

The source is available from here:

Any feedback is welcome, positive or negative, but please remember that this is just an early beta that I hacked together today, so it is not thoughly tested yet...
