If the Firewall is indeed responsible, then maybe try to build a tcp
tunnel instead of udp. If you're lucky the SonicWall will behave more
cooperative with this kind of connections.

Not sure if this helps, but I have my OpenVPN _Server_ behind a SonicWALL (...and most of my clients are behind a SmoothWall -- there's NAT everywhere!!!). No problems whatsoever. IIRC, the MTU on a SonicWALL defaults to 1500 and it will fragment all outbound packets that are larger than this.
