Complete success! I rewired the work network like it should have been
anyway. I am now logging in directly to my DOMAIN controller. It's just
like being at work while at home (this is a good thing?).
It is of course slower than the direct connect at work, but very usable.
And printing ability is wonderful.
Is there a way of benchmarking my connection speed?
