We are using openvpn and openvpn-gui very successfully, they are both great.

However, we require a telnet auth session to a PIX firewall before the VPN port is connected to. Would it be at all possible to somehow integrate this authentication into openvpn-gui?

Everything is possible :-)

How does this telnet auth session work? Do you send a username/password?

Could we solve it by simply running a script before launching openvpn?

This is an example session -:

root@hades stevec # telnet 82.*.*.*
Trying 82.*.*.*...
Connected to 82.*.*.*.
Escape character is '^]'.

LOGIN Authentication

Username: ********

Password:

Authentication Successful

Connection closed by foreign host.
