As your message does not regard development of OpenVPN, it belongs on openvpn-users rather than openvpn-devel; I'm posting this response there.

But where do we use the client's private key ? Why do we need it anyway ?

Generally speaking (ie. not specifically to OpenVPN, but with asymetric crypto in general), the client's (or any side's) private key can be used by the to create signatures which can be authenticated with its public key, or to decrypt content which the server (or any other party) used its public key to create.
